Pantry At 219 is a self-service 24/7 pantry where anyone in need can access food, free of charge.
The onset of the pandemic halted KBIM outreach efforts. During this challenging time, KBIM leaders sought a creative way of servicing the community while still abiding by COVID restrictions for conducting mass gatherings. The idea came to build a small self-service pantry. Before the project began, information was discovered regarding community fridges. KBIM was introduced to FRIDGEPORT, an organization that collaborates to implement community fridges by leveraging various resources that donate food items. These are typically stand-alone fridges run by members of the community. The community fridge model and mission were very similar or KBIM’s idea for a self-service pantry. Thus, KBIM decided to expand the community pantry project by adding a fridge.
Pantry AT 219 was officially opened May 1, 2021. Since its inception, the Pantry at 219 has had the honor of serving as many as 800 in one week.
Where it all began:
KBIM Outreach is no stranger to helping the community. Since 2011, KBIM has helped thousands on an annual basis to gain access to food, clothing, furniture, and beyond. Before the 2020 pandemic outbreak, KBIM held an annual community day. In an effort to facilitate a controlled and safe environment, a permit was secured to shut down the block at 219 James Street. Annually, 700+ individuals attend the fun, free, and safe summer event! It was a great service to the local community knowing, many in Bridgeport live are at or below the poverty line.
